The Process of Making a Wax Model

How Margie does it
I have approximately a dozen different types of wax that are used to carve models. They are used alone or sometimes in combinations of three to four different kinds of wax. Many models must be carved in more than one piece, then assembled. The process for carving each model is different every time. My favorite is the " Deep Detail " carving wax because it's moderately hard, but has just enough softness to make it easy to carve, and for some unknown reason my eyes can just see green the best.

Here is the transformation from wax to the real thing.

My tool collection varies from small needle files and burs to hand made carving tools which my brother Bill also used while he was training to be a professional goldsmith. I've found that my favorite tools are the ones I have made. Every wax model is created by using dividers, a jeweler's saw, files, and carving tools used with a flexible shaft and handpiece. I also use the "carve and add" technique which means that if I'm carving something like an animal or a very sculptural piece I may take away wax and then add it back on with a hot wax pen...much like a sculptor uses clay by carving and adding.

With my many years of stone setting and jewelry manufacturing experience, you can be assured that any model you order will be of the highest quality.
